In this lecture the numerical optimization of an aeroassisted transfer from geosynchronous orbit to a low Earth orbit is considered. The problem is formulated as an optimal control problem with the aim of fuel minimization. A realistic modeling with limited (finite) thrust control and lift control on the atmospheric subarc is used. Numerical solutions obtained by the indirect multiple shooting method are presented.
In addition, a state constraint with respect to the severe heating effects on the atompheric subarc is added to the model. The corresponding necessary conditions via optimal control theory are derived and numerical solutions of this extended problem are presented.
